Creating a Video Blog: The Woodmansee Way!

Creating a Blog

The Woodmansee’s Way

This manual serves to help set up a basic lighting, video, recording, and basic editing for a blog. I am not a professional and these are just tips and a system I have found works for my needs in a business blog, home movies, and personal uses. Have fun and enjoy watching your projects come to life!

**Save yourself the frustration and START by making sure you have PLENTY of storage!

Step 1: Set Up the Lights

Helpful Hints for lighting:

1. ALWAYS film full body (you can clip out later; it is better to have to much then not enough)

2. The back light/hair light is optional depending on the room lighting. The Back light may also face the wall behind the focal point to create the "halo effect".

3. In option 2 make sure one light is taller then your focal point and pointing down almost creating the halo effect.

4. Make sure your lights are the same distance away from the camera and set at the same height for option 1.

Step 2: Mic Check!

Mic Check:

1. Plug Mic into phone

2. Open App (Rode Mic)

3. Press the plus button to add new recording

4. To change title select Details then click name.

5. Set up Audio for max sound input: Select mic icon and turn up 3/4 way.

6. Set up Audio for max input 2: Press speaker icon and turn up 3/4 way.

7. Press RECORD and record one minute of sound to test levels and adjust as necessary.

**To check your inputs snap your fingers in front of mic; if the bar goes red turn the mic and speaker volume down

Step 3: Camera Check!

Camera Check:

1. Select the video setting on phone or camera

2. While doing your mic check get a one minute video check as well

3. ALWAYS shoot full frame and full body. (it is better to have to much the not enough; you can edit out later)

**Make sure you have storage!

**Make sure you have battery and always have a back up and/or a charger

Step 4: LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

ACTION:

1. After sound check review the sound, lighting, and video and adjust as needed.

2. Press record on audio first then press record on video

3.During the recording pay attention to camera image, battery, and try to stay as still, steady, and quiet as possible for the best quality. (but don’t look miserable, it is important to smile, give a reassuring head nod or two because being on camera can be intimidating and you want to give the best product to your client. The first step to good material is making them feel comfortable.)
